This past week saw the launch of Google's latest social network, accompanied by an unusual amount of hype -- if you can consider quotes like "it has a chance" worthy of hype. Seemingly a mashup fo twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, can Google+ sell us on a product that requires users to input a great deal of data, to receive no new functionality in return, aside from the convenience of one login? And should we be even more concerned about the consequences of storing all of our online eggs in Google's one basket?

No one would argue that content management systems make the lives of designers and developers much easier. Personally, I can't imagine building even the simplest website without one anymore. They allow designers like myself build complex, robust, content-driven community websites with the utmost ease... until we try to customize and extend these systems. At that point, front-end developers like myself are left like babes in the dangerous and confusing world of plugins.

Yet we can gather data about these events, and shape them into computer simulations, which shed a great deal of insight into the building blocks of the universe. The result is something between science and art.

Every now and then, you come across some artwork that makes you stop and take a second look, and ponder things a bit deeper. This is exactly what I found with the End of Geography project. Though we live in a world built upon intense social, physical, natural, and technological interactions, it's rare that we think about how this connections tether us to reality. They form the basis of our consciousness and pervade everything we do as human beings, yet we rarely think about the subtle and infinitesimal transference of this data.

A month ago, when Steve Jobs announced he was taking a leave of absence from Apple, the market reacted almost immediately. While the market has become known for overreacting to the smallest tidbit of news, this reaction wasn't the least bit surprising. After all, we are talking about the man who has raised his company's worth 6400% since taking over in the mid-90's. Read that again.... 6400%. What's his secret? He has a vision.
