Finally... Real Fonts for the Web
Published on Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Though it ain’t pretty, Google is really helping us designers pretty up the web. While most designers have been eager to adopt and espouse the @font-face specification for CSS, most gloss over the fact that IE users.. the majority of web users… will miss out on all this wonder until IE9 finally appears on the market. And even then, there’s no way to force people to upgrade.
Once again, Google has come to the rescue with Google Font Directory. Not only do they provide us with a nice selection of fonts, but the most important caveat… support for !E6+. That’s right… Internet Explorer 6+. I’ve put this tool to use already. While most people get to read my blog in the beautiful Aller typeface, IE users get to see the very similar Droid Sans typeface, which does a better job of fitting into my designs than the usual alternative Trebuchet.
Though I do find it quite hilarious that they chose a script font and cheesy, nebulous font for their “Making the Web Beautiful” headline.
